Its Time to Lower the Teacher to Student Ratio Essay -- Argumentative
It's Time to Lower the Teacher to Student Ratio à â Growing up is sufficiently hard to do these days, yet significantly more so when a little youngster's instruction is yielded. The present study halls, kindergarten through school levels, are encountering a noteworthy ascent in the quantity of understudies in each class. This carries the educator to-understudy proportion to an inadmissible level. Educators can't adequately show their understudies if there are an excessive number of in a solitary class. Along these lines, it is critical for the United States' instructive framework to take a top to bottom examination concerning this circumstance and work towards a superior path for our youngsters to learn in a progressively engaged condition. For the good of our children and for our future, we as a whole should help with figuring out how to bring down the educator to-understudy proportion. à The long and transient advantages of lessening class size influence the understudies and the instructors and will proceed into what's to come. By decreasing a class to a normal of eighteen understudies, instructors can invest increasingly one-on-one energy with every understudy. Indeed, in an investigation done in the United Kingdom demonstrated that, Results indicated that in littler classes the educators communicated all the more successfully with the whole class, had progressively continued associations (25 seconds or more) with singular understudies, and required less an ideal opportunity to oversee singular understudy's schedules (Hargreaves, et al 123). Collaborations, for example, these, are particularly imperative to those youngsters in kindergarten through the third grade. With centers around perusing, composing, and math on youngsters in this beginning time of their training, research is indicating that these kids will convey the impacts of a little class with them all thro ugh the rest of their scholarly... ...ize on Teacher-Pupil Interaction in Elementary School Classes in England: Does Research Merely Confirm the Obvious? The new advancements in cloning an organ or a small body part Term Paper
The new headways in cloning an organ or a little body part - Term Paper Example This is the very explanation that an indistinguishable clone is shaped through this procedure. The fate of cloning relies absolutely upon the new looks into which are being finished. Cloning so far has not been fruitful as it was normal. A sheep cart was cloned in the year 1996 and it was considered as one of the best cloning probe a creature. Cloning has never indicated any positive outcomes on people. Cloning has been endorsed by numerous researchers and gatherings who contend that it holds the potential for some advantages for people and can serve to give results and medicines that different techniques have neglected to give. Then again, cloning has been dismissed based on moral contemplations. It has confronted social just as strict analysis inferable from numerous reasons which incorporate the way that cloning has not yielded any significant advantages so far and furthermore it serves to challenge the typical working and harmony of the world (Human cloning 2011; Phil B). Cloning is a procedure which can be contrasted with the undifferentiated cell look into. Separating undeveloped cells and utilizing them for restoring maladies utilizes the way toward cloning. Presently many research treatments are being completed to discover the practicality of the undeveloped cells. An investigation done in New England Journal of Medicine approves the utilization of immature microorganisms in the patients who are experiencing leukemias. The exploration embraced numerous patients into thought who were experiencing leukemias and their treatment choices. The examination at that point contrasted the patients who were furnished and undifferentiated organism transplants with the individuals who were not and it was discovered that immature microorganism transplant from infants were powerful in treating these patients. Therefore it was reasoned that leukemias can be treated with compelling treatment by grown-up undifferentiated organisms dependent on the way toward cloning (Leuk emia Patients Survive with Stem Cell Transplant, 2004). Also another exploration done by the UC scientists demonstrated that bone marrow undeveloped cells can be utilized to viably treat issue which are identified with the eye. These undeveloped cells can significantly assist with relieving the hereditary eye issue in kids. Research done by the UC analysts was done on creatures and the tests were certain. This indicated undifferentiated organisms may likewise adequately take a shot at human subjects to fix eye issue (Bone Marrow Stem Cells May Cure Eye Disease, 2007). This, however it was likewise discovered that grown-up undifferentiated cells can be utilized to fix respiratory failures by the British doctors. The new treatment helped the heart muscles to recuperate from the stun that the treatment got. At the end of the day in view of the patients own undifferentiated cells the patient could recoup from a cardiovascular failure as their heart muscles could be resuscitated (Julie W heldon, 2006). Another exploration completed on skin cells to make them go about as the foundational microorganisms worked viably in treating rodents with maladies of the mind. Parkisons Disease is one of the models which the rodents were experiencing and indicated improvement in view of the undifferentiated organisms. This obviously demonstrates undeveloped immature microorganisms which are viewed as the fundamental cells of a life form can give an advancement in medications of various infections which were already not treatable. (Undeveloped cells from skin treat mind sickness in Rats, 2008). Another examination being done in Spain shows that immature microorganisms can enormously assist with treating hereditary scatters, for example, the Crohnââ¬â¢s Disease. It was discovered that 20% of the patients on which the undifferentiated organism transpl
Personal Philosophy of Leadership
Individual Philosophy of Leadership Being a pioneer is more than essentially holding an initiative position or being able to lead. Everybody is equipped for being a pioneer, however not every person practices their administration capacities. Each personââ¬â¢s thought of authority is unique. My concept of initiative has created after some time, and being an individual from the Presidentââ¬â¢s Leadership Class has helped me build up my way of thinking of administration farther than what it was two months prior. My own way of thinking of administration is the capacity to impact change through showing others how its done, stepping up, and empowering others. There have been numerous things that have influenced my way of thinking of authority. Something that has influenced me as a pioneer is my qualities. One of my basic beliefs is duty. As a pioneer, it is significant I comprehend what to do and what is anticipated from me. At the point when I am dependable as a pioneer, those I am a ttempting to lead are all the more ready to do what I request that they do. Another of my qualities is regard. Before, I am consistently decent and tune in to the thoughts of others regardless of whether they are not the most effortless individuals to be near. As far as I can tell, it has been simpler to gain the regard of my constituents when I regard them as well.My center convictions will keep on impacting my conduct as an innovator later on. The improvement of my administration reasoning has likewise been an aftereffect of viewing my pioneers. One pioneer that has influenced me a great deal has been my dad. At the point when my mother was determined to have Lou Gehrigââ¬â¢s illness, he did everything he could to assist. He took consistent consideration of my mother, kept on telecommuting, and helped me with school while never grumbling. I attempt to carry on as he did in my positions of authority. I do everything energetically and help out as much as I can.I mean to keep pess imism out of effectively unpleasant circumstances and make an effort not to grumble. My pioneers at school, both great and terrible, have additionally influenced my style of initiative. They helped me realize when I have to kick back and let those I am attempting to lead assume responsibility and when I have to assume responsibility for the circumstance. Viewing the terrible pioneers do things I didn't concur with urged me to challenge to process and change things when I turned into a pioneer. There have additionally been individuals who have spurred me to be a pioneer, particularly my secondary school ensemble director. At the finish of my lesser year, my executive called me into his office and revealed to me he would be moving me from the main violin segment to the subsequent violin segment. He said he realized I hushed up in the rear of the primary violin segment, yet he could see I had the administration abilities important to sit in the front of the subsequent violin area. This truly inspired me to attempt to do right by him the following year at the front of the area. A wide range of parts of my life have influenced my administration reasoning. I need others to have the option to see my initiative way of thinking at work.To do this, it is significant that I have the option to associate with those I look to lead, as ââ¬Å"The Relational Leadership Modelâ⬠states, ââ¬Å"Relationships are the point of convergence of the authority processâ⬠(Komives, Lucas, & McMahon, p. 74). One way I plan to build up a relationship with my supporters is by ââ¬Å"Modeling the Wayâ⬠(Kouzes, Posner, 2008). I will do this by explaining my qualities and showing others how its done. Explaining values is significant in light of the fact that ââ¬Å"To acquire and continue individual validity, one must have the option to plainly verbalize profoundly held beliefsâ⬠(Kouzes, Posner, 2008, p. 9). By explaining my qualities, those I look to lead will com prehend my crucial will trust I have an objective as a primary concern. Showing others how its done will assist me with having a superior relationship with my devotees since it makes ââ¬Å"a atmosphere that makes it feasible for everybody to adjust themselves to shared valuesâ⬠(Kouzes, Posner, 2008, p. 38). At the point when pioneers don't try to do they say others should do they free their believability, and I need my adherents to have the option to pay attention to me. I might want my adherents to have the option to associate with me and to adjust their qualities to mine.Through ââ¬Å"Modeling the Wayâ⬠, I need to have the option to have a decent connection with my supporters. My way of thinking of authority will likewise influence my future as a pioneer. I will put an accentuation on my qualities on the grounds that ââ¬Å"a cognizant spotlight on qualities ought to be at the center of any administration advancement effortâ⬠(Cilente, p. 45). One of my future st andards I lead with will be to ensure everybody in the organizationââ¬â¢s values line up with mine. How might I have the option to make any procedure when everybody in the gathering needs something else? This is something I had never considered being an individual from the Presidentââ¬â¢s Leadership Class. The Presidentââ¬â¢s Leadership Class has helped impact my way of thinking of initiative. I have taken in my qualities and shortcomings of authority through the class. In the wake of doing my first reflection paper, I discovered that my most vulnerable region of authority is ââ¬Å"Inspiring a Shared Vision. â⬠This helped shape my administration reasoning by causing me to understand the significance of offering my yearnings to the gathering. I have discovered that I should be stronger with my contemplations. This is one zone I mean to enhance n my future as a pioneer. I plan on doing this through training. I might be awkward from the start, be that as it may, in the l ong run, it will work out easily for me. The Social Change Model of Leadership says, ââ¬Å"A pioneer isn't really an individual who holds some proper situation of administration or who is seen as a pioneer by othersâ⬠¦Leadership can't be portrayed essentially as far as the conduct of the individualâ⬠(Komives, Wagner, p. 45). My meaning of authority is the capacity to make a positive change in the public eye and have the option to get others eager to see that change.I need to be the epitome of that definition to other people. At the point when others take a gander at me, I need them to have the option to state I set a model, have clear achievable perspectives, and cause everybody to feel like they are adding to the association. My own way of thinking of authority is imperative to how I behave as a pioneer. It has taken a very long time to create to what it is today and it is continually evolving. Numerous parts of my life have influenced my way of thinking of initiative fr om my qualities, to pioneers throughout my life, and individuals who have inspired me. I will keep on building up my authority with reasoning as I experience new initiative experiences.References Komives, Susan R. , Lucas, Nance, & McMahon, Timothy R. (2006). Immelt: Reinventing General Electric
This contextual investigation was a piece of a technique task taken at the SDA Bocconi School of Management. Iââ¬â¢d like to thank my colleagues Gouri Wagle, Felipe dellââ¬â¢Oro, Andrea Masina, Paolo Cerchiario, Ashna Suri-Sasmal and myself for the bits of knowledge that added to get through this work. The issue: In September 2009, Geââ¬â¢s Board of Directors reappointed Jeff Immelt as CEO. My group was approached to set up an update giving direction on the accompanying four qustions: 1. The key highlights of Immeltââ¬â¢s methodology for GE, in compariso to that of his antecedent, Jack Welch. While Jack Welch was for the most part centered around transient goals, his replacement, Jeff Immelt was progressively worried about the drawn out system. Welchââ¬â¢s authority was described by unsafe ventures that prompted innovative unrests, forceful cost cutting plans and precise execution estimations. Then again, Immelt stressed natural development, mechanical advancements and misusing rising chances. 2. Whatever degree has Immeltââ¬â¢s methodology been adjusted (a) with advancements in the outside business condition since 2001 and (b) GEââ¬â¢s assets and capabilities?Jack Immeltââ¬â¢s technique was particularly lined up with the outer business improvement and its distinct advantages and capacities. Outside business occasions that happened during the period 2001-9 included: the annihilation of the Twin Towers, Enronââ¬â¢s breakdown, the Tyco International Scandal and the 2008-9 money related emergency which exposed an expanded mindfulness in corporate administration issues. The venture network trusted GE hasnââ¬â¢t been straightforward with the wellsprings of their benefits and hence short GEââ¬â¢s shares. GE was then downsized from AAA to AA+.GEââ¬â¢s reaction was two overlap with the point of reestablishing financial specialist certainty and augmenting their worth. Right off the bat, GE improved correspondence with speculators throu gh progressively nitty gritty money related revealing. Besides, GE utilized on its broadened portfolio so as to abuse key collaborations that would prompt development in rising economies. A portion of the activities included utilizing brand notoriety to pick up floor in rising economies, for example, India and China. Likewise, its gigantic interests in R&Dresulted in new items, for example, ââ¬Å"Smart Gridâ⬠and sodium battery.GE additionally abused itsmanagerial ability to expand productivity and lessen costs. Thus, consumer loyalty and coherency inside the association followed. 3. How well is the procedure performing? Multifaceted nature stays a noteworthy test for some uber organizations. The bigger and increasingly complex the organization, the harder it is to perform amazingly well. When Immelt took over from Jack Welch just about 8 years back (as of April 2009), GE stock was exchanging at $53 an offer. after 8 years, itââ¬â¢s at around $12.The companyââ¬â¢s ra ting was AAA, the best, granted to just a bunch of endeavors, presently itââ¬â¢s AA+. Taking a gander at GEââ¬â¢s share cost may give the impression the organization pulverized worth, however a nearby glance at the companyââ¬â¢s ROE shows that over the period, GE enrolled a normal 19% ROE, which is very great thinking about the companyââ¬â¢s presentation to outer business conditions. Figure 1: GEââ¬â¢s stock against the S&P 500 and Siemens AG (2001-2009) Immelt may have committed a few errors during his residency as GEââ¬â¢s CEO.GEââ¬â¢s money related arm put into too dangerous organizations, including shopper Mastercards and land. In any case, one should take note of that before the monetary emergency, GE made impressive benefits coming principally from the now-addressed interests in its money related division and nobody could have anticipated that the budgetary emergency could have been so inescapable. GE has been putting vigorously in R&D and centerin g in what it accepted would be the matter of tomorrow.Since his arrangement, Immelt has been caught up with reshaping GE into one of the worldââ¬â¢s most concerning issue solvers through its framework, vitality, transportation and medicinal services divisions in a wide, high-result scope. Immelt made some brilliant divestitures. GE escaped subprime contracts in 2007 and left protection before the segment discouraged. In spite of the fact that GE Capital unit endured immense inversions during the budgetary emergency, it never enlisted a misfortune and the organization had the option to confine its exposure.Overall, in the event that we consider the profits GE paid to financial specialists and all the emergencies that happened somewhere in the range of 2001 and 2008, Immeltââ¬â¢s execution looks decent and the organization outside and forward center system may pay-off. 4. Is there a case for an extreme change in strategyââ¬specifically, should GE be separated into various prog ressively concentrated organizations (some of which would be skimmed as autonomous cited organizations, others may be offered to existing contenders)? An extreme change wouldnââ¬â¢t be an answer for GEââ¬â¢s fate.GE is doubtlessly enduring a combination markdown in light of the fact that thereââ¬â¢s an absence of unmistakable and immaterial interrelationships among a portion of its specialty units. The rise of GE Capital has made another huge business for GE. GE ought to thusly attempt to concentrate on its two center organizations and dispose of what isn't connected either to the mechanical or to the money related organizations. GE Capital ought to be on a level plane incorporated to GEââ¬â¢s mechanical business. Moreover, GE should continue stripping failing to meet expectations and non-center organizations except if they make collaborations inside the conglomerate.GE ought to strip NBC Universal, the business loaning and renting, and the shopper and mechanical organiz ations, which have enlisted negative development since 2004. This could give expected cash-flow to put resources into high development organizations. GEââ¬â¢s future as an effective aggregate relies upon its capacity to saddle strategically pitching and cross-advancement between divisions, abuse scale points of interest, separate itself from its immediate rivals, keep up its job as a national boss, and be lucid with its way of life and brand. The Role of Body Language Essay
The Role of Body Language Essay Communication is one of the essential tools used for the exchange of ideas, feelings, and even visions. It is the activity of passing across the intended information through exchange of signals, writing, thoughts, behavior, and messages (Yates 433). However, for the process to be completed, several elements of the latter must be facilitated. The basic elements of communication include a potential sender, the intended message, and finally the targeted recipient. The way information is being transmitted depends on the medium. Moreover, the medium of transmission entirely rely on whether the communication is verbal or non-verbal. Non-verbal communication makes use of body languages, symbols, and signs as its ways of passing across any message (Yates 501). As per the requirements of the project, my area of specialization builds its concrete foundation on the body language as one of the means of communication. It is a form of physical and mental ability of manââ¬â¢s non-verbal communication that consists of gestures, facial expressions, body posture, and eye movements (Pease Pease 211). Body language is one of the most effective means of relaying very sensitive information and maintaining the confidentiality of the message passed across. The sole reason of my keen interest in this means of communication is the unique nature possessed by the latter as compared to other means. People continue using body language no matter the advancement in technology and development of most effective means. Analytical goals of my project draw its origin from the non-verbal forms of communication. To mention a few, the objectivity of the project was to understand the power and importance of excellent non-verbal communication, discover the necessary listening skills required for checking the shared understanding, modes of repairing the wrong communication and finally, understanding the effects of appropriate non-verbal communication and vocal tone in building rapport (Borg 457). Body language covers most of these objectives and helps in achieving the ultimate goals of communication as intended in this project. Assumptions made in this project can only be achievable if the means of communication put into consideration can be articulated to meet the requirements. Body languages are more advantageous and it can handle situations that cannot be handled by other means. The first advantage is that, this means can handle a situation where the sender or the recipient is handicapped or physically disabled (Borg 244). For example, a dumb person can use signs and facial expressions to relay information. He/she may be unable to utter the real words but the meaning of the message can be effectively understood through the body language. Noisy places may inconvenient verbal means but body language can comfortably be used in such environments. For example, in a factory where there is a lot of noise, the manager can instruct the employees and those under him through body language (Pease and Pease 466). The above means can also be used in passing across any sensitive information whose confidentiality is supposed to be maintained. Signals used between the sender and recipient may only be understood between the two and the third party may not get the real meaning of the information. The final advantage lies under the geographical difference between the sender and the recipient. The means may effectively be applicable if the two are at a visible distance but their spoken words may not be heard clearly. For example, if someone wants to greet a person, (Borg 558). Who is in a moving vehicle, waving a hand will be a more civilized way as compared to shouting. In addition, body language proves to be less expensive as compared to most sophisticated ones. Parties having an intension of cutting down the cost of communication can make use of body language. The above means loses its effectiveness in case the barriers exist in the environment under consideration. The major barrier is the case where both the sender and recipient are uninformed about the meaning of some of the signs and gestures. This will make the latter to be ineffective and therefore reducing its applicability. Common signals and body gestures known to many people cannot be used to relay any confidential information. Body gestures that carry more than one meaning may be difficult to be used as the involved parties may not get the intended message. Individuals lacking the body parts utilized in the communication are automatically excluded from using the means (Pease and Pease 674). This makes the latter to be limited to those people who possess the body parts that are supposed to be used in the process. For example, a blind person cannot use eye movements to relay the message; crippled people may also not use their legs or hands in the process of communication. Most of the time, body language is used by both handicapped and normal people so long as the parties understand the signs and body gestures well. Very large geographical difference may inconvenience use of signs and gestures in passing the meaning. This can only be done through digitized means where signs are being transmitted electronically. The project involved laying down the necessary strategies that will characterize the means of communication to be determined. The first strategy for this work involved testing the effective means of communication that can be used in a noisy environment. Various means of communication were to be tested in the latter environmental conditions and the effective method was to be pointed out. The second strategy was to determine the most appropriate means that can be used in relaying confidential messages (Pease and Pease 688). Almost all available means under the test proved ineffective and the one with the highest degree of confidentiality was determined. The final strategy was to cut down on the cost of communication. This meant to find the cheapest means of communication that can fully satisfy the process. The strategies outlined above almost gave the expected results (Oxford 509). The rhetorical barriers and advantages mentioned earlier in this project gave direct reflections of what was to be done and the ultimate goals were absolutely fulfilled. The first strategy of noisy environmental condition was fully satisfied by the rhetoric advantage of body language as the means of communication. Body language proved communicative under the tested conditions. The second strategy of relaying confidential messages was previously reflected by the rhetoric advantage of body language. The latter gave maximum satisfaction in passing across confidential information. The final strategy of cutting down the cost of the process of communication gave out several means of communication. Some of the verbal means of communication met the standards unexpectedly and the strategy was to be articulated to meet the requirements. However, the adjustments made met the satisfactory standard of making body languag e as the only means of communication. The rhetoric ended up being effective in analyzing the arguments. The rhetoric arguments proved perfect in the analysis and strategies gave full support for the approval of arguments. Documented statistics for the related case study almost projected the same results as the one that were rhetorically reflected in the project (Oxford 599). However, in this project, the strategized conclusion could not have been drawn from the rhetoric barriers and advantages, putting the last strategy into consideration, which almost dissatisfied the expected outcome. The argument of whether to rely on the rhetoric reflections or not, in finding the most appropriate means of communication in the project almost proved effective. However, the rhetoric reflection failed in giving the details of flexibility of the means and the ability of the latter to accommodate the upcoming challenges (Melkote 444). Body language plays many roles in the current society. Considering the technological advancements, this means of communication is seen primitive and cannot be relied on. However, what people are not supposed to forget is that, this means forms part of the most immediate means of communication before other means can be put in place. People who do not have a common communicative language find it hard to communicate with one another (Melkote 408). The only immediate way is by use of body language. In normal life circumstances, emotions find their roots in body language and twisting of some body parts may turn out passing a strong message to the targeted recipient. People around the globe appreciate body language and the roles it plays. Ideas of generating the most sophisticated means of communication are being generated by body language. What is most important is understanding the ideology of communication that is to be achieved by the scientists. Having hopes in the unpromising inventions makes people forget that the effective means lies in our bodies and the only task is to learn how to use it. Learning body Language is one of the most interesting things that one can do and in most cases, it turns out to be more of a fun. Do you need help with writing an essay about Body Language? On the contrary, a study by Selwyn in 2009 found that students use Facebook for other purposes other than learning. The findings established that Facebook was being used as a time wasting platform through social communication activities such as following updates posted by friends.Drawbacks to Facebook in educationThe influence of Facebook today cannot be ignored because social media has taken over the youthful generation. However, if teachers must use Facebook to engage their students in a less formal manner as far as education is concerned, then anyone would argue that the results would be worthwhile. If teachers wish to use Facebook as an educational platform, then the biggest concern would be the interruption by rogue friends on Facebook. A teacher may create an official Facebook page and post information in an attempt to make interpersonal or academic interactions with students. The friends on Facebook can also post messages on the users wall while the teacher can control the content disclosed on their university web pages. The only concern with this approach is that strangers, friends and other students can post defamatory and discrediting information on the wall, and the teacher would be unable to control the content posted. This is quite dangerous. However, no empirical studies have verified the authenticity of these claims. Critics of this approach argue that students may use Facebook for other purposes other than education. For instance, they may post improper pictures of themselves on their Facebook profiles. Cases of students posting nude or half-naked pictures on their profiles have been reported, and this has a potential damage to their future employment in case their profile data is reviewed by employers (Hew, 2011).Another drawback of using Facebook in education attributes to the amount of time spent on other activities other than studying. For instance, low academic performance among students has been attributed to time spent on chatting and posting status updates on Facebook. This means that students have less time to study. However, instructors and other concerned authorities in higher learning may use these indicators to identify students who are at risk of academic failure due to excessive Facebook use. Apparently, monitoring students activities on Facebook is not easy (Hew, 2011). Nevertheless, higher education professional may use Facebook as a platform to encourage beneficial use and discourage other non-relevant activities. For example, a faculty could post information on their Facebook page to encourage student engagement and improve on their grades and not simply for social interactions.ChallengesStudies have been conducted to ascertain whether Facebook is an appropriate platform for academic use. 43% of the respondents asked responded negatively arguing that Facebook was more of a social media platform than an academic tool. Many respondents explained that using F acebook otherwise was indeed contradictory. Most students do not approve of suing Facebook as an academic tool. Hargittai, E. (2007) reveals that most of the suggestions put forward have nothing to do with the pedagogic facet of learning and teaching, but more to do with departmental or module relates administrative arrangements (Hargittai, 2007).Students were also asked if staff from the university could contact them for marketing, pastoral, teaching or administrative purposes via Facebook. As expected, most students were opposed to the idea because most of them considered Facebook as a platform for personal interactions between family and friends and not a tool for academic use. Based on this statistics and opinions, it is evident that students regard Facebook as a social tool than one for formal academic purposes. As much as students used it privately for education purposes, they did not want it incorporated as a formal necessity in the education system. The issue of trust in Face book also comes into play. There is quite a significant percentage of trust among Facebook users, but this does not extend to student/teacher relationship. Social media sites including Facebook provide users with an opportunity to share personal information in order to develop social networks online. However, there are risks associated with disclosure to millions of Facebook users across the world (McBride and Wahl, 2005). This explains the trust among Facebook users, as most of them are willing to share sensitive information with their friends on Facebook. This trust is anchored in the privacy setting available on the Facebook wall.In order to facilitate the adoption of Facebook into the education system, certain dimensions must be put in place.
